Cougars Take Game One |

photo links of game one below Victoria's Mike Hammond goal at 11:03 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie to give the Cougars their third one goal lead of the game that stood up to be the winner. Victoria got on the board first when Josh Wyatt taped in a nice cross ice feed from TJ Liebl at 3:10 of the first period. It stayed that way till the leagues leading scorer Dan Bell made some nice moves in close, and put one high over the blocker of Cougars starting goalie Max Pelzner at 9:24. Kory Coward assisted on the play. Cougars regained the lead with 4:42 left in the first period, when Eric Guthrie jumped on a rebound after he set up Steve Axford alone in front who was robbed point blank by Scott Ismond. Panthers out shot the Cougars 11-10 in the first. There was no scoring in the second period, as both teams traded chances. Panthers out shot the Cougars in the second period 12-4. The Panthers Greg Simpson was left alone in the slot, and line mate Blake Huppert forced a turn over along the end boards, and spotted Simpson for the one timer that beat Pelzner low glove side to tie the game. Kyle wells also picked up an assist on the play. Mike Hammond lifted the stick from behind Ian Ellanberger, and turned to pick up the lose puck. Hammond went in alone from the Panthers blue-line and made a nice move to his right taking Ismond with him, then pulled back to his left and backhanded one into the open net. Guthrie scored into the empty net with 19 seconds left on the clock to seal the deal for the Cougars. Panthers and Cougars both had 10 shots in the third period. Game two goes Thursday night at Archie Browning Arena starting at 7:15 pm. If the game is anything like the first one, you will be in for a treat, as that was some off the best hockey played this year. Both teams had huge hits, plenty of scoring chances, and their was 13 power play opportunities, 7 by the Panthers, and 6 by the Cougars, but it was both teams penalty kill that won out on those attempts.
