The final piece of the CTC jigsaw puzzle was snapped into place on Sunday, as the Peninsula Panthers defeated the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 8-3 to win the VIJHL 2010 Island final best-of-five series, three games to one.
The Panthers struck six times in the second period to snap a 1-1 tie and added one more in the third period. The Glacier Kings responded with two of their own in the third period, but were unable to come back against a stronger Panther team. This is the first VIJHL playoff title for the Panthers, who will join PIJHL champion Aldergrove Kodiaks, KIJHL champion Revelstoke Grizzlies and the VIJHL host Oceanside Generals for the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial Junior 'B' championship tournament.
The Panthers showed off their depth and balance with all four lines scoring including two goals from their blueliners. Craig Eisenhut led the way with two goals and singles were added by David Courtney, Brent Lucente, Mike Scarborough, Mike Colantone, Gerry Fitzgerald, and Josh Bloomenthal. Tyrell Turgeon and Evan Campbell both added a pair of assists. It was a devastating hit by Evan Campbell early in the second period that seemed to ignite the Panther's offence.
Tournament play begins on April 1st, 2010 at Oceanside Place in Parksville at 3:30 PM, when the Peninsula Panthers meet the Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL) for game one of the round-robin.
