CAT TRACKS - JANUARY 15 - 22, 2010

JANUARY 15, 2010 - PENINSULA PANTHERS vs KERRY PARK ISLANDERS.

On Friday, January 15th, the Panthers hosted the Kerry Park Islanders for what would be an exciting and close game to watch with goaltenders Brady Berisoff and Taylor Pears set to go head to head.

Kerry Park opened the scoring about five minutes into the first with an even-strength goal by Trevor Gicas (14), with assists going to Joel Gordon (9) and Cole Peterson (7). This would turn out to be the only goal scored in the first two periods.

The next thirty minutes were filled with opportunites and power plays at both ends of the ice, but the goaltenders did their jobs and stopped all shots until Gicas got his second of the game, on the PP, with assists to Gordon and Cole Peterson (7), to put the Islanders up 2-0 just a minute into the third.

The Panthers kept fighting back and were finally rewarded at 11:45 of the third period when team Captain, David Courtney (13) got one by Pears, with assists going to his Alternates, Evan Campbell(11) and Mike Scarborough (2)to pull within one.

The goal gave the Panthers the confidence they needed to tie the game, less than two minutes later when Max McCloy (19) scored at 13:20 with assists going to Tanner Carter (25) and Josh Bryan (6).

Peninsula was able to take the win with less than three minutes remaining when Cole Thomson (20) got the game winner with assists going to Campbell and Scarborough.

JANUARY 16 - PENINSULA PANTHERS vs OCEANSIDE GENERALS

The Panthers travelled to Oceanside on January 16th for their second game in 24 hours, where they lost a close one to the Generals by a score of 4-2. Goaltenders for the night were Lukas Simpson for the Panthers and Braden Johnson for Oceanside.

For the second night in a row, the Panthers were down early in the game with an unassisted goal coming from Parksville at 11:50 of the first by Kyle Yamasaki (17). The Generals continued and scored again, just a few minutes later when Jason Wark (28) scored with assists going to Peter Funnel (3) and Tuff Pierro-Zabotel (44).

Panthers got back in the game with just six seconds to go in the first when Tanner Carter (25) scored, with an assist to Michael Scarborough (2). But the comeback would not last long as Oceanside went ahead again by two when Brandon Leigh (13) got one by Simpson with assists going to Cam McCarrick (9) and Wark.

Panthers kept battling through the third, but the Generals were not willing to give up their lead. The Panthers got close with just 14 seconds left in the game when Evan Campbell scored with helpers from Carter and Josh Bloomenthal(8), but it was not enough. The Generals got the empty netter with just one second remaining in the game.

JANUARY 22, 2010 - SAANICH BRAVES vs PENINSULA PANTHERS

January 22nd saw the return of the Saanich Braves to take on the Cats at Panorama. These two teams have battled hard against each other during season play, with both teams recording wins in close games. Today’s game would be different. The Braves were assessed a penalty 1:22 into the game and the Panthers capitalized on the PP. The Panthers went up by 15 seconds into the PP when Tanner Carter (25) got one by Saanich goaltender Benjamin Cantor, with assists going to Joe Densmore (18) and Josh Bryan (6).

The Panthers went on to score four more goals, with the second goal by Densmore getting his second point of the night, with assists to Evan Campbell (11) and Kurtis Rumenovich (3), on an ES goal at 8:57. The third goal was buried by Josh Bryan who scored at 12:14 (ES), with assists to Campbell and Densmore, making it a two point night for these players. Fourth goal at ES was scored by Michael Scarborough (2) at 14:01, assisted by Tyrell Turgeon (14) and Gerry Fitzgerald (21), and finally the fifth goal of the period by Cole Thomson (20), assisted by Carter and Bryan on the PP. The Braves were unable to get anything by Kantor, allowing the Panthers netminder Brady Berisoff and his team a first period 5-0 lead.

The second period would prove to be different with a number of penalties, and a fight between Bryan and Sam Waterfield. The two battled hard and the crowd was cheering on the 16 year old Panther rookie against the 19 year old Waterfield. Both were assessed Fighting majors and Game Misconducts and Bryan left the game with 3 points. The penalties and fights continued through the rest of the game.

Saanich finally got on the board at 12:21 of the second with two former Panthers working to get their first goal of the game, which came SH. Trevor Yee (9), scored with the only assist going to Ian Ellenberger (6). The Panthers answered back less than a minute later, on an ES goal from Campbell, assisted by Joshua Bloomental (8) and Carter.

With less than two minutes remaining, Braves put another ES goal past Berisoff at 18:45 when Wade Murphy (20) buried one assisted by Jackson Skerratt (13). The Panthers again answered back with the final goal of the game going to Densmore (4th point of the game), with assists to Carter and Campbell.
